Douglas Emhoff is the first Second Gentleman in American history, as his wife, Kamala Harris, is the first female Vice President. Before moving to Washington, DC, Emhoff served as an entertainment lawyer for 30 years.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York before moving to New Jersey. When he was a teen, the family moved to Los Angeles, where Emhoff attended California State University. He later gained his Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California.
Emhoff worked as an entertainment lawyer during the 1990s before setting up his own firm in 2006. Among his many high-profile clients during this time were Walmart and Merck. He later joined DLA Piper in 2017 working between its Washington, DC, and California offices.
When Harris announced her bid for Vice President, Emhoff left the firm to avoid conflict of interest. However, in late 2020, Georgetown University Law Center announced he would join the faculty as a guest lecturer of its Technology Law and Policy department.
As Second Gentleman, Emhoff will continue to work towards similar goals, including fighting for justice, equality, and human rights.
Emhoff has two children from a previous marriage, Cole and Ella, and he married Harris in 2014 after meeting a year earlier. Along with being the first Second Gentleman, Emhoff is also the first Jewish spouse of an American Vice President.
